According to the New England Journal of Medicine, 42 studies in which users of Avandia were compared to people who were not on the medication showed that there was a 43% increase of heart attack in the people who used Avandia. There was also a 64% increased risk of dying from cardiovascular causes while taking the drug.

So what was Avandia? Avandia is an anti-diabetic drug manufactures by GlaxoSmithKline. It was approved by the FDA in 1999 and was used by millions of Americans to help control their blood sugar levels.

How has the FDA responded to these findings? The FDA has urged users of Avandia to immediately talk to their doctors about whether Avandia is right for them. However, the agency didn’t issue a strickter warning label on the drug.
