Today the FDA announced that the heartburn medications Prilosec and Nexium do not cause heart trouble. The agency says that after investigating a possible connection suggested by a couple of studies they are now satisfied that the extremely popular medications are not responsible for the increased risks suggested by the studies. With recent controversy surrounding other one-time blockbuster medications like Avandia, and with the Vioxx settlement fresh on the mind, this comes as welcomed news to AstraZeneca shareholders who can now breath a collective sigh of relief.

"Based on everything now known at the agency, the reported difference in the frequency of heart attacks and other heart-related problems seen in the earlier analyses of the two small long-term studies does not indicate the presence of a true effect."

The FDA goes on to say that doctors should continue prescribing these drugs and patients should continue use of these products as directed.
