In the past couple of months various companies have recalled almost 20 million Chinese-made toys. Most of the blame seems to be focus around China and poor manufacturing; however, the Chinese manufacturers say that this should not be the case. They allege that the recalled toys were very poor in design and that is reason they were dangerous to children.

The manufacturers say that most of the toys were manufactured to exact specifications provided by American designers. Chinese manufactures point out that the 19 million in the recent recall was only a small percentage of the 22 billion toys that China exported last year. They claim that overall Chinese toys are relatively safe.

Director of the General Quality supervision, Inspection, and Quarantine, Li Changjiang, said,

"I personally have seen some of the toys. There are serious problems in their design, so they are highly dangerous for children. These types of toys would be recalled in any country."

Li conceded Chinese producers also have responsibility for making problematic toys, but asked, "what kind of responsibility should the U.S. importers and U.S. designers take in this respect?"

This is a good question. Many are so quick to blame Chinese production, but it is quite possible that much of the blame should stay closer to home.
