Cell Phone Use Could Double Risk of Brain Cancer

A new study suggests that the cell phones, that almost all of us use on a daily basis could be more damaging to our health than smoking. According to British Vini Khurana, one of the would most renowned neurosurgeons, mobile phone use over a 10 year period could more than double a person's risk for developing brain cancer. With about a billion smokers and over three billion cellular phone users worldwide, if Khurana assessment is correct, over the next we could see a catastrophic loss of life due to cancer caused by the use of mobile phones.

Dr. Khurana reviewed more than 100 previous studies on the effects of mobile handsets and concluded people should avoid using cell phones whenever possible and called on governments and industry to take "immediate steps" to reduce radiation exposure through the devices.

"In the years 2008-2012, we will have reached the appropriate length of follow-up time to begin to definitively observe the impact of this global technology on brain tumor incidence rates," he said.

France has already issued warnings about the use of mobile phones. Germany and the European Environment Agency have also encouraged people to minimize their use of cellular phones.

The Mobile Operators Association has rejected the claims made by Dr. Khurana saying the study does not display an accurate analysis of published science. They say that Khurana's finding do not support the view of the World Health Organization and over 30 independent scientific reviews.
