Yesterday federal agents raided a St. Louis drug company after being tipped off that the company was hiding drug products behind a fictitious walls and manufacturing medications under unsanitary conditions. The company, General Therapeutics Corp., produces over the counter medications for both humans and animals, dietary supplements, vitamins, and NC solution. Agents from the FDA and the U.S. Marshall's seized around $300,000 worth of products from the St. Louis facility.

The facility has had a history of poor performance in inspections. In 1999 the company was cited for improper storage of materials, poor sanitation, substandard cleaning of equipment and building defects. The FDA issued a warning letter after this inspection. In 2000 however the company claimed to longer be producing pharmaceuticals and was not cited for violations. Earlier this year an investigation uncovered that the company had not actually stopped producing pharmaceutical products.

"Instead, the firm had constructed several rooms hidden behind a false wall, apparently to conceal drug products from FDA," court documents said.

The company did not have FDA approval for many of the materials found in facility and the FDA has issued a warning letter about the issue. The FDA particularly sights NC solution as being a threat. The unapproved NC solution is an antifungal product that claims to prevent fungal infections on the fingers and toes.

Consumers who have any products manufactured by General Therapeutics, including NC Solution, should consult their healthcare provider about discontinuing their use and report if they have experienced any adverse events that they suspect are related to the use of these products.
