Bush signs FDA bill into law

Yesterday President Bush signed a new bill into law that will give the FDA a much greater ability to police drug companies' actions and drug reactions. This is good news for everyone (maybe not the drug companies), as it will hopefully allow the FDA to solve some of the problems that have been very apparent in recent months and years. The new law will create a registry to allow the FDA to better monitor post approval clinical trials and adverse events associated with drugs on the market. The FDA will have the authority to impose fines on companies that do comply with orders.

The FDA has seen its fair share of controversy in the past few years and has been accused of dropping the ball on several occasions. They organization was hit hard after the recall of Vioxx with allegation of rushing drugs onto the market and not requiring additional testing. This has been the continued sentiment for the past couple of years as we have seen problems with medical devices like the Kugel Mesh Hernia Patch and more defective medications like Avandia.

Optimistically the FDA will now have the extra funding and ability to do a much better job protecting American citizens from the drugs that are supposed to be helping them.
