A tragic car accident on the Galveston causeway Sunday evening took the life of a 16-day-old baby boy. The accident occurred when the vehicle the child was riding in, his grandmother's car, stalled in the southbound lanes of the causeway. The vehicle was struck from behind by another vehicle, trapping the newborn in the back seat. The child was in a car seat and was properly belted in, but the force of the accident proved to be too much. The newborn was pronounced dead at the scene.

His 57-year-old grandmother and a 4-year-old boy who also was riding in the car were taken to the University of Texas Medical Branch with non-life threatening injuries.

The causeway is currently under construction and does not have shoulder lanes. Authorities do not believe that alcohol was involved in the accident and no charges are expected to be filed against the other driver.
